Keep or throw the confectioner’s sugar?

Should I keep the confectioner’s sugar or toss it?
Last weekend, I begrudgingly tackled my annual pantry clean-out. I discovered some expired cans of baked beans, various condiments, and even a few mouse droppings—mostly near the dog food. Thankfully, it looks like they only nibbled on stray kibble and didn’t breach the plastic container.

Upon further inspection, I found that the mice had chewed through two bags of confectioner’s sugar. I’m tempted to keep it, but I know I should probably throw it away. My frugal side wants to hold on to it, but my common sense says otherwise. What do you think?

One response to “Keep or throw the confectioner’s sugar?”

  1. It’s definitely a tough call, but when it comes to food safety, it’s best to err on the side of caution. Even if the bags are sealed, the fact that mice got to them raises some serious concerns about contamination. Powdered sugar can be difficult to clean or sanitize properly once it’s been compromised by pests. Considering your pantry clean-out already revealed mouse activity, tossing the sugar is probably the safest option. It’s not worth the risk of getting sick over a couple of bags of sugar. You can always buy more and keep your pantry in better shape in the future! Plus, it sounds like your clean-out was a good opportunity to create a mouse-proof environment going forward.
