Leaving abuse, need new food ideas to ‘find’ myself again. Ideas?

Reclaiming My Culinary Joy After Leaving an Abusive Relationship

Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out as I’m trying to rediscover myself after escaping a toxic relationship. The meals I was allowed were very limited—predominantly heavy red meats, copious amounts of butter and oil, and super processed orange cheeses. Unfortunately, carbs, fruits, a variety of vegetables, and most seasonings (besides garlic and salt) were off the table.

Cooking used to be a passion of mine, and I’m struggling to recall the vibrant meals I once enjoyed. This has been a struggle for me since I’ve also gained about 50 pounds due to this restrictive diet, and I’m eager to start eating healthier and more balanced meals.

Here’s what I’m looking for in my new culinary adventures:

  • Bright and fresh flavors
  • Vegetable-forward dishes
  • Incorporation of quality cheeses or charcuterie
  • Spicy, zesty, umami, and acidic elements; not a fan of sweet flavors
  • A love of fish and seafood, including canned options
  • Enjoyment of good oils (in moderation) and tasty sauces
  • I prefer easy meals: salads, sandwiches, finger foods, or a single meat accompanied by intriguing sides
  • I’m really obsessed with anything fermented, vinegar-based, or mustard

I’m open to cuisines like Mediterranean, French, Italian, South American/Latin, Indian, Middle Eastern, and sushi. However, I’m not a fan of American or Canadian styles, farm/country cooking, carnivore or keto diets, British dishes, or most Asian-inspired foods.

I would love to hear your recipe ideas or meal suggestions that will help me rebuild my confidence in the kitchen and reignite my creativity. Cooking has always been such an important aspect of my life, and I’m excited to dive back in!

Thank you so much for your help! 🫶🏻
