Make French bread soft again

Reviving Stale French Bread

I have two loaves of French bread that have become a bit stale since I brought them home yesterday. I’d like to use them to make French bread pizza (similar to a Red Baron style) and am wondering how I can soften them up. I’ve heard of the water method and wrapping them in foil, but I’m concerned that this might make them overly crispy, especially since I plan to bake them with toppings. Apologies if this is a silly question, but I could really use some advice on how to do this without making them too crunchy—I’m wearing braces and can’t handle anything too crispy!

  1. No worries, that’s a great question! To soften your French bread without making it too crispy, you can try a couple of methods:

    1. Steam Method: Lightly spritz the loaves with water or place them in a steamer for just a few minutes. You want to hydrate the bread without it getting too soggy. This can help to restore some of that softness.

    2. Oven with Foil: Wrap your loaves in aluminum foil and place them in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10-15 minutes. This will help retain moisture and soften the bread. If you’re adding toppings for French bread pizza, you can still put the toppings on after softening, just make sure you don’t leave it in the oven too long to avoid it crispening up.

    3. Microwave Method: Wrap the bread in a damp paper towel and microwave for about 10-15 seconds. This is quicker, but be careful not to overdo it, or the bread can become tough.

Whichever method you choose, be sure to keep an eye on it so it doesn’t get too crispy. Once you soften the bread, you can add your pizza toppings and bake until everything is heated through. Enjoy your French bread pizza!
