Alternative PSI Cooking Times for Pressure Cookers

I struggled to find clear information on cooking times for different pressure levels in pressure cookers, and while I came across a few posts, many felt overly complicated. After some searching, I found a straightforward guide that I’d like to share.

Cooking times in a pressure cooker vary depending on the pressure setting, as higher pressures raise the boiling point of water, allowing food to cook faster. Here’s a simple breakdown:

At 15 psi: This is the standard pressure for most recipes, providing the quickest cooking times.

At 10 psi: Expect the cooking time to be about 50% longer than what is indicated for 15 psi. For example, if the recipe calls for 30 minutes at 15 psi, it will take approximately 45 minutes at 10 psi.

At 5 psi: Cooking times will roughly double compared to 15 psi. That means a recipe that takes 30 minutes at 15 psi might take around 60 minutes at 5 psi.

Keep in mind that these are general estimates, and actual cooking times may vary based on the type of food and other factors. If you’re trying something new, it’s a good idea to check on your food periodically to see if it’s done.

  1. Thanks for sharing this valuable information! It’s really useful, especially for those of us who might be trying to adapt recipes for different pressure cooker settings. The breakdown of cooking times based on psi is super clear and easy to follow.

Just to add, when you’re switching between pressures, it’s a good idea to keep a food thermometer handy to ensure food reaches safe internal temperatures. And like you mentioned, checking for doneness periodically is a smart move—especially with denser foods. Happy cooking!
