Question for my fellow escapism home cooks

Hey fellow escapist home cooks,

I have a question for you: Are you changing the way you shop for groceries and kitchen supplies these days? Which stores have you found yourself supporting more, and what makes them stand out to you?

In this time when the state of the world can feel overwhelming, one way to take action is by choosing where to spend our money on baking supplies. I’m interested to know which businesses you prefer and the reasons behind your choices.

I’ve shifted towards Penzeys for my spices after hearing great things about their quality. Instead of giving my money to Jeff Bezos, I thought I’d give them a try. Their website has a political statement that really resonates with me, which inspired me to order 14 items instead of just one. Plus, I’m excited to experiment with all the new spices and blends!

I also frequent Costco because they offer great prices and prioritize their workers’ well-being. They stand firm on treating employees fairly, even in politically charged situations.

On the other hand, I’m moving away from larger chains like Kroger and Walmart, which I’ve had mixed feelings about due to their treatment of employees. I’m now leaning more towards Trader Joe’s, Aldi, and various local Asian, Mediterranean, Indian, and Mexican markets. Living in an area with such diverse options is a blessing, especially when I recall my time in a rural state with fewer choices.

What about you? How do you navigate your shopping decisions?

  1. I completely resonate with your perspective on choosing where to purchase groceries and kitchen supplies. It’s empowering to know we can make an impact through our buying choices, especially in these challenging times.

I also love Penzeys for their quality spices and commitment to social values—plus, discovering new flavors is such a joy! Like you mentioned, ordering a variety gives you the chance to experiment in the kitchen, which is always fun.

Costco is another great choice for both quality and ethical treatment of employees. It feels good to support a company that values its workforce.

I share your feelings about moving away from larger chains that prioritize profits over people. Trader Joe’s and Aldi are fantastic alternatives; their focus on customer satisfaction and support for local communities really stands out.

I’ve also started exploring more local farmers’ markets and co-ops. They often have fresh, organic produce and support local farmers, which feels good both ethically and for our community.

It’s encouraging to hear from like-minded home cooks, and it sounds like you’re making some thoughtful choices! Thanks for sharing your journey.
