A Question for My Fellow Home Cooks Seeking Escapism

Hey everyone! I wanted to ask if any of you are rethinking where you shop for groceries and kitchen essentials these days. Which stores do you recommend, and what makes them stand out to you?

In times when the world can feel overwhelming, one way we can make a difference is by choosing which businesses we support with our purchases. I’d love to hear about the places you choose to shop and your reasons behind it.

For example, I’ve been buying from Penzeys recently because I’ve heard they offer quality spices. Instead of giving my money to Jeff Bezos, I decided to order from Penzeys, which seems to be one of the best options out there. I appreciated their political stance reflected on their website, so I ended up purchasing 14 items instead of just one. Plus, now I can explore a variety of new spices and blends!

I also shop at Costco since they offer great prices and treat their employees well, resisting the urge to cut corners for political gain.

On the flip side, I’m moving away from larger chains like Kroger and Walmart, which have always made me uneasy due to their treatment of employees. Instead, I’m choosing to shop more at Trader Joe’s and Aldi, as well as local Asian, Mediterranean, Indian, and Mexican markets. Living in an area with so many options is a blessing, especially since I know that those in rural areas may not have the same choices.

Can’t wait to hear your thoughts!

  1. I completely resonate with your perspective on making intentional choices when it comes to grocery shopping! It’s empowering to use our buying power to support businesses that align with our values. Penzeys sounds like a fantastic choice for spices, especially since they not only provide quality products but also stand for social issues that matter to you. It’s a win-win to stock up on new spices while supporting a company that reflects your beliefs!

I share your sentiments about Costco as well. Their commitment to fair wages and good working conditions really sets them apart from many larger chains, and it’s refreshing to see a company prioritize their employees.

Like you, I’ve also been shifting my grocery shopping habits. I love shopping at Trader Joe’s for their unique offerings and commitment to customer service. Their approach to sourcing products with quality in mind is a big plus for me. Aldi is also a great option—it’s hard to beat their prices and value.

Additionally, I’ve been exploring local farmers’ markets whenever possible. Supporting local farmers not only gives me fresher produce, but it also strengthens the community. I appreciate the diversity of foods available at ethnic markets, too. Each one has its own charm and unique offerings that broaden my cooking horizons.

It’s definitely an adjustment, especially if you’re used to larger chains, but it feels good to make choices that better reflect my values. Thank you for sharing your journey! It’s inspiring to see others committed to making mindful decisions in their cooking and grocery shopping.
