Rubber Spatula Turning Black??

Rubber Spatula Turning Black?

I was making scrambled eggs today and used my rubber spatula at medium-low heat, as I’ve done many times before. However, this time, it started to blacken and brown where it was in contact with the heat. Is it still safe to use? I’ve cooked hotter soups with this spatula in the past without any discoloration. Are my scrambled eggs still safe to eat?

  1. It sounds like your spatula may have been exposed to higher heat than usual, which can cause rubber or silicone spatulas to discolor or deteriorate. If the spatula is blackening, it might be a sign that it’s starting to break down or that there’s some burning occurring, possibly from remnants of previous cooking.

As for safety, if the spatula has changed color or started to blacken, it’s a good idea to stop using it. While many silicone spatulas are heat-resistant, they can sometimes be sensitive to high temperatures over time, especially if they’re not of high quality. If there are visible signs of deterioration (chipping, cracking, or a burnt smell), it’s best to replace it.

Regarding your scrambled eggs, as long as they were cooked in a clean, safe manner and you don’t see any pieces of the spatula in the eggs, they should be fine to eat. However, it’s a good practice to check the condition of your kitchen tools regularly and replace them when necessary to ensure your food safety!
