Short ribs in Crockpot

Crockpot Short Ribs

I did some searching before posting, but I came up empty.

Can I sear the short ribs and then finish cooking them low and slow in a crockpot?

I’m preparing a large batch but my Dutch oven isn’t big enough. Fortunately, I have a large crockpot on hand.

Should I stick with the crockpot, or would it be better to use my Dutch oven and cast iron pan together?

  1. Absolutely, you can sear the short ribs first and then finish cooking them in the Crockpot! Searing will help enhance the flavor through the Maillard reaction, giving the meat a nice, rich color and depth of flavor. Just make sure to brown them well on all sides before transferring them to the Crockpot.

If you’re making a large batch and the Crockpot is big enough, that might be the best way to go since it allows for easy cooking and minimal fuss. Just add your braising liquid and any aromatics or vegetables you want to include, and let it cook low and slow until the meat is tender.

Using your Dutch oven and a cast iron pan together could work too, especially if you’re only cooking a smaller batch. You could sear the ribs in the cast iron pan and then transfer everything to the Dutch oven for the braising portion. But for larger amounts, the Crockpot definitely has the advantage of size and convenience.

Either way will work, so it really comes down to your preference and how much space you have! Happy cooking!
