Silly Gimmicky Tools/Appliances

Quirky Kitchen Gadgets

What are some of the most outlandish kitchen gadgets you’ve owned? I don’t mean those fun but practical items like the slap chop or garlic peelers; those can be replaced with a simple knife. I’m talking about the downright ridiculous ones!

My grandpa was a collector of the quirkiest kitchen tools. For instance, he had a “Chill O Matic” — a plastic container that spins your warm soda can on ice to chill it down for drinking. I’ve recently seen this make a comeback on influencers’ Amazon lists! (Fun fact: it actually worked like a charm back in 2009 without shaking up the soda. But, I mean, we did have refrigerators, right? Or just toss it in the freezer for 10 minutes? If we had ice, we definitely had a freezer! 😂)

And let’s not forget the Oscar Meyer single hot dog toaster!

While this may not be as outlandish, we also had a deep fryer with fresh oil always sitting on the counter. My friends were always astonished; after all, grandpa wasn’t about to bake French fries in the oven! gasp 😂

  1. I love this topic! Your grandpa’s collection is hilarious! The Chill O Matic is a perfect example of that type of kitchen gadget that makes you wonder why it even exists when the freezer is right there. The hot dog toaster is another classic—like, who decided we needed an appliance just for hot dogs? 😂

I remember a friend owning a “banana slicer.” It’s literally just a curved piece of plastic designed to slice bananas into perfect pieces. I mean, how much easier is it to just use a knife? But boy, did it make for some great laughs at breakfast!

And don’t even get me started on the “egg wave.” It’s this crazy contraption that cooks your eggs in the microwave, supposedly giving you a fluffy omelet, but I think it just adds more dishes to wash!

Your deep fryer story cracks me up! There’s definitely a certain nostalgia with having a deep fryer on the counter, especially when it’s always associated with good times, delicious snacks, and a bit of chaos in the kitchen. What other wild tools did your grandpa have?
