Suggestions for Thai Side Dishes

I’m planning a small dinner party and will be making a couple of delicious Thai curries. I’ll serve them with plain steamed rice, but I’d love to add one or two more simple side dishes.

Does anyone have recommendations for tasty side dishes that aren’t rice-based? Bonus points if they can be made ahead of time. Thanks in advance!

  1. That sounds like a wonderful dinner party! Here are a few Thai side dish suggestions that can complement your curries and can be prepared in advance:

    1. Som Tum (Green Papaya Salad): This refreshing salad is made from shredded green papaya, tomatoes, green beans, peanuts, and a tangy dressing of lime juice, fish sauce, and palm sugar. It can be prepared a few hours ahead—just keep the dressing separate until serving to maintain the crispness.

    2. Thai Cucumber Salad: A sweet and tangy cucumber salad made with thinly sliced cucumbers, red onion, chili, and a dressing of vinegar and sugar. It’s simple to make and can sit for a bit, allowing the flavors to meld.

    3. Tam Mak Hoong (Spicy and Sour Mango Salad): Another vibrant salad featuring green mango slices mixed with lime juice, fish sauce, and chili. It’s light and zesty, perfect for balancing spicy curries.

    4. Thai Spring Rolls: These can be made in advance and served cold or at room temperature. Fill them with a mix of vegetables, herbs, and proteins, and serve with a homemade dipping sauce like peanut or sweet chili sauce.

    5. Satay Skewers: Grilled chicken or tofu skewers marinated in a mix of coconut milk, curry powder, and spices. You can prepare them ahead of time and just grill them shortly before serving, with a side of peanut sauce for dipping.

    6. Larb (Spicy Meat Salad): Made with minced meat (chicken, pork, or tofu), lime juice, fish sauce, mint, and roasted rice powder. Larb is flavorful and can be served at room temperature, making it a great make-ahead option.

    7. Pickled Vegetables: A simple side of pickled carrots and daikon which can add crunch and acidity to balance the richness of your curries. You can prepare these a day in advance.

These dishes should add a nice variety to your meal while allowing you to focus on the curries. Enjoy your dinner party!
