What are your thoughts on liquid smoke?

I’m curious if anyone has experience with it. I don’t have space for a smoker, and it seems like a good alternative. I’m not a master chef or anything; I just want to make some smoked trout dip. If you have any thoughts or tips, I’d love to hear them! Thanks!
