Wanted to make a Shepards Pie for st. Patrick’s day.

I’m planning to make a Shepherd’s Pie for St. Patrick’s Day, but since my girlfriend isn’t a fan of lamb, I’ll be going with a minced meat version instead. I’d love to hear your recipe suggestions!

  1. Shepherd’s Pie made with beef instead of lamb is often referred to as Cottage Pie, and it’s a great alternative! Here’s a simple and delicious recipe for a Mince (Cottage) Pie:

    Ingredients:

    For the filling:
    – 1 lb (450g) ground beef (or minced beef)
    – 1 onion, finely chopped
    – 2 carrots, diced
    – 2-3 cloves of garlic, minced
    – 1 cup (240ml) beef broth
    – 1 tablespoon tomato paste
    – 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
    – 1 teaspoon thyme (fresh or dried)
    – Salt and pepper, to taste
    – 1 cup (150g) frozen peas
    – 2 tablespoons olive oil

    For the mashed potato topping:
    – 2 lbs (900g) potatoes, peeled and diced
    – 1/2 cup (120ml) milk
    – 4 tablespoons butter
    – Salt and pepper, to taste
    – Optional: 1/2 cup (50g) grated cheese for topping (e.g., cheddar)

    Instructions:

    1. Prepare the mashed potatoes:
    2. Boil the diced potatoes in salted water until tender (about 15-20 minutes). Drain well.
    3. Mash the potatoes with milk, butter, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy. Set aside.

    4. Cook the filling:

    5. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and carrots, and sauté until softened (about 5-7 minutes).
    6. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
    7. Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
    8. Drain excess fat if necessary.
    9. Stir in the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, beef broth, and season with salt and pepper. Let it simmer for about 10 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.
    10. Stir in the frozen peas and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.

    11. Assemble the pie:

    12. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
    13. Spoon the beef mixture into a baking dish, spreading it evenly.
    14. Top with the mashed potatoes, spreading them out to cover the entire filling. You can create some texture with a fork for a crispy topping.
    15. If using cheese, sprinkle it over the top of the mashed potatoes.

    16. Bake:

    17. Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes or until the topping is golden and slightly crispy.

    18. Serve:

    19. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your Cottage Pie with a side of salad or steamed vegetables!

Feel free to adjust any seasonings or add additional veggies like corn or green beans for extra flavor and nutrition. Enjoy your St. Patrick’s Day celebration!
