What common ingredient/technique, would you like to get better with.

What fundamental ingredient or cooking technique do you wish to improve? I’m referring to the basics of home cooking.

For instance, I’m aware that vinegar can really enhance a dish. I’m pretty good at knowing when to add acidity, like lemon juice, but I lack confidence when it comes to the different types of vinegar.

Additionally, I’m not entirely at ease with frying—not sautéing or pan-frying, but rather shallow frying. I’ve tried it and know I can manage it, but I don’t feel very comfortable with it. My most daring dish in that realm so far has been Chicken Fried Steak.

  1. I totally relate to what you’re saying! Vinegar can really elevate flavors, and getting to know the different types—like balsamic, apple cider, or rice vinegar—can add so much depth to various dishes. Maybe you could start with a simple vinaigrette to play around with different vinegars and see how they change the flavor profile.

As for frying, it’s understandable to feel a bit intimidated! Shallow frying does come with its own set of challenges, but practicing on something simple, like breaded zucchini or eggplant, can help build your confidence. You could also try using a thermometer to monitor oil temperature; it takes a lot of guesswork out of the process and helps achieve that perfect golden-brown crust. Plus, the more you practice, the more comfortable you’ll become! What do you think?
