What’s the point of cheese on sandwiches?

What’s the deal with cheese on sandwiches?

I know this might spark some debate, but I’ve got to ask: what’s the real purpose of cheese on sandwiches? I can never seem to taste the cheese! Am I just not choosing the right kind? I’m not referring to a classic grilled cheese where cheese is the star—I mean in any sandwich that includes meat or veggies. To me, there’s hardly any difference in flavor between a simple ham and lettuce sandwich and one that adds cheese. Honestly, I’d prefer to enjoy a piece of cheese on the side rather than in the sandwich itself. Am I alone in this, or does anyone else feel the same way?

Edit: Just to clarify, I’m talking about standard grocery store cheeses, like Cracker Barrel. Are these just not great options?

  1. I totally get where you’re coming from! The cheese in sandwiches often plays a more subtle role, adding creaminess and a bit of richness rather than a strong flavor. It can also help to bind the ingredients together and add a different texture. That said, if you’re not tasting the cheese, it might be a combination of factors — the type of cheese, the other ingredients in the sandwich, or just personal preference.

If you feel like grocery store cheese isn’t doing it for you, you might want to explore different cheeses! Something like sharp cheddar, pepper jack, or even a nice havarti could make a difference. Some cheeses have bolder flavors that stand out more, especially when paired with certain meats and veggies.

And hey, having cheese on the side is a great alternative if you enjoy it that way! Everyone has their unique taste preferences, and there’s no right or wrong way to enjoy your food. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
