Forgot I had Frozen BBQ Eel, is it still good?

Subject: Is My Frozen BBQ Eel Still Safe to Eat?

Hello everyone!

I recently discovered some vacuum-sealed frozen BBQ eel while cleaning out my freezer. It’s packaged with a date of September 2021 and a best-before date of September 2023. Now that it’s March 2025, I’m wondering if it’s still safe to consume. Any thoughts? Thanks!

  1. When it comes to frozen food, while the “best before” date is a guideline for quality rather than safety, it’s important to err on the side of caution. Since your BBQ eel was packaged in September 2021 and the best before date was September 2023, it’s past that date.

If the eel has been continuously frozen at 0°F (-18°C) or below, it may still be safe to eat, though the quality (taste and texture) might have declined. Before deciding, check for any signs of freezer burn, off smells, or unusual textures once you thaw it. If everything appears normal and you feel comfortable with it, it should be okay to cook and eat. However, if you have any doubts, it’s always best to prioritize safety and discard it. Enjoy your dinner!
