Freezable Recipes for Bone Marrow

Creative Ways to Preserve Bone Marrow

I recently made beef bone broth using marrow bones and ended up with about 6oz of leftover bone marrow that I want to preserve. It’s currently sitting in a bowl in my fridge, and I’m searching for ways to prepare and freeze it for future meals.

In the past, I blended bone marrow with some broth in a food processor and froze the mixture in an ice cube tray. I was surprised to see a distinct separation between the fat and protein layers! While I used these cubes in spaghetti sauce, the flavor turned out a bit oily and unexciting.

Now, I’m eager to explore some more creative ideas for using and freezing bone marrow. Any suggestions?

  1. It sounds like you have a great opportunity to utilize that bone marrow in some delicious and creative ways! Here are a few ideas for preparing and freezing it that you might find more exciting than your previous experience:

    1. Bone Marrow Butter:
    2. Mix the bone marrow with softened butter, herbs (like parsley or thyme), garlic, and a little lemon juice. Blend until smooth, then portion it into small containers or use an ice cube tray. This can be used to add richness to vegetables, steak, or spread on bread.

    3. Savory Bone Marrow Mushrooms:

    4. Sauté mushrooms with garlic and herbs, then mix in the bone marrow until melted. Portion this mixture into ice cube trays and freeze. You can easily add these little cubes to risottos, pasta, or as a topping for meats.

    5. Bone Marrow Chili:

    6. Add the bone marrow to your chili recipe for a rich, savory flavor. Once cooked, you can freeze the chili in portions. This way, you get a hearty meal that’s packed with flavor.

    7. Marrow Infused Oil:

    8. Slowly heat the marrow with olive oil, garlic, and herbs to infuse the oil. You can then strain it and freeze it in small jars or ice cube trays. Use this infused oil for drizzling over salads, pasta, or grilled vegetables.

    9. Marrow Spreads:

    10. Blend the marrow with cream cheese, chives, and a bit of Worcestershire sauce for a savory spread. Freeze it in small containers for easy appetizer options.

    11. Soup Bases:

    12. Incorporate the marrow into soups by stirring it into vegetable or chicken broth. Once cooled, portion the broth into freezer bags or containers for future use.

    13. Pasta or Grain Salads:

    14. Use the marrow to enrich pasta or grain salads. You could toss it in with some cooked grains, nuts, roasted vegetables, and a dressing. Portion the salads into freezer-safe containers.

Remember to label your portions with the date and contents, so you can easily identify them later. Enjoy getting creative with the marrow, and happy cooking!
