How can I purchase caviar directly from fish distributors?

A friend of mine works at a restaurant, and his boss allows him to order caviar from their distributor. He manages to get 8 oz of Classic Osetra Caviar for about $170. While it may not be from the most prestigious brand, I find it quite tasty, especially considering that most brands sell 200 grams (just under 8 oz) for over $1000, typically around $1100-1200!

Is there a way for me to order caviar directly from the same suppliers that restaurants use? It would be fantastic to avoid paying such a steep markup!

(Just a note: my friend mentioned he can’t purchase it for others since his boss prefers to keep it within the restaurant.)

One response to “How can I order caviar from fish distributors?”

  1. Ordering caviar from fish distributors typically requires a business license, as many distributors cater specifically to restaurants and retailers. However, there are a few options you can explore:

    1. Research Wholesale Distributors: Look for fish distributors that sell to both businesses and individuals. Some might allow consumers to place orders if you meet certain criteria. Websites like SeafoodSource, Seafood.com, or even local fish markets that have a wholesale division can be helpful.

    2. Create a Business Account: If you’re passionate about caviar, consider starting a small business dedicated to gourmet foods. With a legitimate business license, you could set up an account with distributors and order caviar directly.

    3. Online Retailers: Some online retailers specialize in gourmet foods and offer caviar at lower prices than traditional retail stores. Look for reputable vendors that have good reviews.

    4. Local Fish Markets: Sometimes local fish markets will carry caviar and may offer competitive prices, especially for lesser-known brands. It’s worth asking them if they have any options.

    5. Join Food Co-ops: Some food cooperatives purchase in bulk and may have access to wholesale pricing, including caviar. You could join one or consult with them to see if they can procure it.

    6. Caviar Subscriptions: Some companies offer subscription services for gourmet foods, including caviar. While this might not be the same pricing as your friend’s source, it can still be more manageable than retail prices.

    7. Networking: Connect with other chefs or restaurateurs who may have connections to fish distributors. They might be willing to help place an order for you or give you insights on where to buy.

While it’s unfortunate that your friend’s boss won’t let him buy caviar for others, exploring these options might help you find a more affordable way to enjoy high-quality caviar!
