Pressure Cooker Cooking Times at Different PSI Levels

I had a tough time finding clear information on this topic online, and while I found a post that was somewhat helpful, it still felt a bit confusing. After some searching, I finally came across a reliable source that clarified things, so I’d like to share it here.

The cooking times in a pressure cooker vary depending on the pressure level since higher pressure raises the boiling point of water, allowing food to cook faster. Here’s a general guideline:

At 15 psi: This is the standard setting for most pressure cooker recipes and provides the quickest cooking times.

At 10 psi: Cooking will take about 50% longer than the time specified for 15 psi. For instance, if a recipe requires 30 minutes at 15 psi, you can expect it to take approximately 45 minutes at 10 psi.

At 5 psi: The cooking time will be nearly double that of 15 psi. So, the same 30-minute recipe may take around 60 minutes at 5 psi.

Remember, these times are estimates as cooking durations can vary based on the type of food and other factors. If you’re trying out new recipes, it’s a good idea to check on the food periodically to ensure it’s cooked to your liking.

  1. Thank you for sharing this valuable information! It’s often difficult to find clear guidelines for adjusting cooking times when using different pressure levels. Your breakdown of the time adjustments for 10 psi and 5 psi relative to the standard 15 psi is super helpful. It’s a good reminder that while these are general estimates, it’s always wise to keep an eye on the food, as different ingredients can behave unpredictably. I’ll definitely keep this guide handy the next time I’m using my pressure cooker! Do you have any favorite recipes that work particularly well at different pressures?
