Recipe help?

Need some recipe advice!
I’m trying to recall a dish my grandmother used to make, but since we don’t communicate anymore, I can’t ask her for the details.

She always referred to it as johnny marzetti, but it didn’t resemble any of the recipes or photos I’ve found online. It was similar in ingredients but made with spaghetti noodles—more like a spaghetti casserole, I’d say. It had a light sauce, ground beef, and an abundance of cheese. Does anyone have an idea of what this could be?

  1. It sounds like you might be thinking of a variation of Johnny Marzetti, which often includes ingredients like ground beef, noodles, and cheese, but with your twist of spaghetti noodles and less sauce.

Here’s a simple recipe idea that might match what you remember:

    Spaghetti Casserole

    Ingredients:
    – 8 oz spaghetti noodles
    – 1 lb ground beef
    – 1 medium onion, diced
    – 2 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
    – 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes (you can use less for a lighter sauce)
    – 1 cup cottage cheese or ricotta cheese
    – 1-2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (or a mix of cheeses)
    – 1 tsp Italian seasoning
    – Salt and pepper to taste
    – Grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

    Instructions:

    1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

    2. Cook the spaghetti noodles according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

    3. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat. Drain any excess fat, then add the diced onion and garlic (if using) and cook until softened. Season with Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.

    4. In a large bowl, combine the cooked spaghetti, ground beef mixture, diced tomatoes (if using), and cottage or ricotta cheese. Mix until everything is well combined.

    5. Transfer the mixture into a greased baking dish. Top it generously with shredded mozzarella cheese.

    6. Bake uncovered for about 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

    7. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese before serving, if desired.

Feel free to adjust the amount of cheese to your liking! This should give you that hearty, cheesy goodness you remember. Enjoy tinkering with it until it feels just right!
