Rubber Spatula Turning Black??

Is My Rubber Spatula Safe After Turning Black?

Today, while making scrambled eggs, I noticed that my rubber spatula began to darken and brown in the areas that were in contact with the heat. I was cooking on medium-low and have used this spatula for eggs before without any issues. Previously, it handled hotter soups without changing color, so this was unexpected. Is it still safe to use, and are my scrambled eggs still good to eat?

  1. It sounds like your spatula may have been exposed to higher heat than usual, which can cause rubber or silicone to discolor or even degrade. If the spatula is starting to blacken, it’s likely it’s been damaged and could potentially release harmful substances into your food. Even if the eggs themselves are safe to eat, it’s best to err on the side of caution. I recommend not using the spatula anymore and getting a new one. As for your scrambled eggs, if they were cooked after the spatula started to discolor, it’s safer to discard them just to avoid any risk. Always prioritize safety when it comes to cooking utensils!
