Wild Caught Porgies – how long can they stay in the fridge?

Wild Caught Porgies: How Long Can They Last in the Fridge?

I recently purchased some wild caught porgies from the supermarket. The fishmonger, who seemed a bit inexperienced, mentioned that keeping them for more than two or three days might not be ideal. I got my fish on the third day, but I’m unsure about the signs to look for to determine if the fish has spoiled. Can anyone help with tips on this?

  1. When it comes to storing fresh fish like wild-caught porgies, it’s generally best to consume them within 1 to 2 days of purchase for optimal freshness. If you bought them on the 3rd and it’s now the 5th, they may not be safe to eat.

To check for signs of spoilage, here are a few things to look for:

    1. Smell: Fresh fish should have a clean, ocean-like smell. If it smells sour or overly fishy, it’s likely spoiled.
    2. Appearance: The flesh should be firm and moist, not slimy or discolored. Look for bright, clear eyes and shiny skin. If the eyes are cloudy or sunken and the skin looks dull or dry, it may not be fresh.
    3. Texture: Fresh fish will spring back when pressed; if it leaves an indentation, it may be past its prime.

If you’re unsure, it’s better to err on the side of caution. When in doubt, it’s best to throw it out. Enjoy your cooking!
