Samosa but easier shape?

Looking for an easier way to make samosas! I’m hosting an iftar and love the idea of samosas, but I don’t have the time or patience to fold 100 triangles. I recently tried some delightful “samosas” at a friend’s place that were simple D-shaped pockets of dough, and they were delicious. I’m considering this method, but I’m searching for an even simpler option. If I use squares instead of circles, will the filling stay put, or is that a recipe for disaster? Any advice would be appreciated!

  1. Absolutely, you can definitely go with square-shaped pockets! Using a square shape is an excellent way to simplify the process even further. Just cut your dough into squares, place your filling in the center, and then fold the corners over to create a pocket. Seal the edges with a bit of water or egg wash to prevent any filling from spilling out during cooking.

If you’re worried about the filling leaking, make sure to not overfill them. You could also use a fork to crimp the edges, which adds an extra seal and a nice decorative touch. Plus, any leftover dough can be re-rolled and cut into more squares, so you can minimize waste that way. Happy cooking and enjoy your iftar!
